Universities Australia supports the government's new national campaign to encourage more Australians to become a teacher.
"Teachers have one of the most important jobs in the world, forming creative, flexible minds to tackle the biggest challenges," Universities Australia Chief Executive Catriona Jackson said.
"During meetings of last year's working group on the national teacher workforce action plan, we heard again and again how important it is to recognise and celebrate teachers.
"It's time to stop bagging teachers.
"Anything we can do to reinforce and celebrate their value is vital, while encouraging more people to become teachers. We need more teachers in every pocket of the country.
"It's terrific to see federal and state and territory governments come together to shine a light on this important profession and to encourage more Australians to consider teaching as a career.
"Australia's universities can help give our teachers the best start and equip them with the skills they need to fulfil rewarding careers, but this is only one part of the story.
"Working closely with governments and unions, we'll continue to address barriers to attracting and retaining teachers. Raising the status of the teaching profession is a vital part of the solution.
"Looking after our hardworking teachers and ensuring the best and brightest are educating our kids is a national effort and it's in our national interest."
