National Rugby League congratulates Cameron Smith

NRL CEO Todd Greenberg tonight congratulated Melbourne Storm Captain Cameron Smith on becoming the game's most prolific point scorer.

Smith tonight broke the record previously held by Bulldogs winger Hazem El Masri, who scored 2,418 points during his career.

Smith scored 6 points in this evening's game, against North Queensland Cowboys at 1300Smiles Stadium, giving him 2,422 points during his career so far.

"Cameron is one of the game's true statesmen and his record - and records - enhance that reputation," said Greenberg, who was at 1300Smiles Stadium to congratulate Smith on the record.

"He is the game's most capped player and now he has added another significant milestone, one which is difficult to see being challenged for some time.

"Cameron is approaching 400 NRL matches, and his effect on his team and on the game shows no signs of being diluted, which is testament to his talent, his work ethic, his durability and his intelligence as a player.

"On behalf of the NRL, I congratulate Cameron on this wonderful achievement."

El Masri said Smith deserved to hold the record.

"Records are meant to be broken," El Masri said. "Cameron has been and is a wonderful player and in my opinion is a future Immortal. I feel privileged to have held this record but am happy to pass it on to a true champion."

Smith's tally is made up of 43 tries, 1,123 goals and 4 field goals.
