Native plant giveaways return for 2023

Darwin City Council

City of Darwin's popular native plant giveaway program is back for 2023, with Bicentennial Park in the CBD serving as the venue for the first installation.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the community had been clear that transforming Darwin into a cool, green and clean city was a top priority.

"City of Darwin has a strong focus on our natural environment, and our city is looking better than ever through tree planting, shading and beautification projects," Mr Vatskalis said.

"The native plant giveaways are not only a huge hit; they are also a key way City of Darwin can work with the community to secure a greener future for Darwin.

"Increasing the number of native plants will green our urban spaces and enhance biodiversity in Darwin.

"These species also generally require less water than other species, increasing the city's resilience throughout the Dry seasons," he said.

The first giveaway for 2023 will be held on Saturday 11 March at Bicentennial Park (near the playground), from 8am until stocks last.

There will be 2000 plants available, with species including groundcovers, shrubs and trees.

A limit of six plants per household applies, and proof of residency in the Darwin municipality will need to be provided.

Future giveaways are planned throughout the municipality in April, May and July, with times and locations to be released closer to the giveaway dates.
