New $10.5 million road paves way for Port Hedland investment

  • $10.5 million upgrade of the entrance road to the Boodarie Strategic Industrial Area (SIA) in Port Hedland completed
  • Project part of WA Government's $5.5 billion WA Recovery Plan focused on building infrastructure, economic, health and social outcomes
  • Upgrade delivers on the State's commitment to make SIAs project ready to attract investment and diversify the economy
  • The $10.5 million upgrade to the entrance road of the Boodarie Strategic Industrial Area (SIA) in Port Hedland is complete, paving the way for the precinct to become a world-class heavy industrial estate.

The Boodarie SIA comprises 4,000 hectares of 'Strategic Industry' zoned land located 12 kilometres south of Port Hedland off the Great Northern Highway. Close proximity to the port and future service corridor connections ensures Boodarie SIA is ideally positioned to accommodate downstream resource processing industries related to the iron ore and gas resources of the Pilbara region.

The upgrade has created a primary access point for the SIA as well as improved safety for turning vehicles at the intersection of Boodarie Station Access Road by including acceleration and deceleration lanes for existing and future industries.

The upgrade was funded under the Western Australian Government's post-COVID-19 $5.5 billion WA Recovery Plan, focused on building infrastructure, economic, health and social outcomes and delivering a pipeline of jobs.

The Boodarie SIA is one of 13 SIAs across WA, located in close proximity to key infrastructure and skilled local workforces.

With a policy lead by the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation and delivered by DevelopmentWA through the Industrial Lands Authority, SIAs are designed to support investment in the downstream processing of the State's resources and other strategic industrial activities.

As stated by Lands Minister John Carey:

"Western Australia's resources sector has powered the Australian economy during the COVID-19 pandemic, and this significant upgrade to the Boodarie SIA access road will ensure we continue to grow the economy and jobs in the Pilbara region.

"This was a shovel-ready infrastructure project that has delivered a critical intersection upgrade to the standard required for future heavy industrial development.

"Boodarie is one of 13 SIAs across the State where we are working to support employment growth through the supply of strategically located industrial land.

"The road upgrade has provided central access to the estate and will facilitate investment opportunities for future proponents, delivering on the State's commitment to make SIAs project ready to attract investment and diversify the economy."

As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:

"Boodarie's close proximity and connections to the Port Hedland port, the world's largest bulk export port, make it a key strategic area with the potential to evolve into a world-class job-creating heavy industrial estate.

"Future expansion of Boodarie SIA could also play a major role in the development of our hydrogen hub in the Pilbara."

As stated by Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:

"This upgrade has been a critical project in the Pilbara region and means the access road in and out of the Boodarie SIA can now cater for the heavy industrial work that will occur on the land.

"The Boodarie SIA is well located close to the Port Hedland port, and will help drive more jobs for people in the Pilbara by investing in downstream processing projects."
