New 80-metre Pelican Boardwalk Extension Now Complete

MidCoast Council

The newest section of the Pelican Boardwalk on Memorial Drive, Forster is now complete, giving locals and visitors more space to enjoy this popular waterfront location.

The 80-metre over-water extension continues the boardwalk east towards the Red Spot boat shed. It builds on the recently completed additions along the Forster foreshore.

The new section improves access, safety and amenity along the Forster Tuncurry Foreshore Walk.

"The Pelican Boardwalk is a much-loved part of the Forster waterfront and this extension gives the community more opportunity to enjoy Wallis Lake with an over-water vantage point," said MidCoast Council's Executive Manager Public Spaces, Liam Bulley.

"It has been great to see locals and visitors making the most of the first stage of the extended boardwalk and kayak launching platform over recent months. The further 80-metre extension provides another high-quality public space for people of all ages and abilities."

The latest works included construction of the suspended boardwalk section and provision for a future public marine effluent pump-out facility to help keep our waterways clean. Interpretive signage will be installed over the coming months for the community to enjoy.

The project is part of ongoing improvements to marine facilities and the Forster Tuncurry Foreshore Walk.

In addition to the new 80-metre section of boardwalk, completed works along this section of the foreshore in recent years includes:

  • replacement of deteriorated timber decking
  • a 120-metre suspended boardwalk
  • a new low-level landing with improved water access for swimming and paddleboarding and
  • a kayak launching system

Signage explaining the cultural significance of the site, the ecological values of the waterways and the history of the area.

"This project is about supporting recreation, tourism and local business. At the same time, it's improving safe and accessible connections along our foreshore," Mr Bulley said.

The project has been funded via the NSW Government's Regional Tourism Activation Fund Round 2 and a co-contribution from Council via Forster Development Contributions.
