Artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies are increasingly common in Australian workplaces and are changing the way work is performed. While these technologies can present new and emerging risks, the process for managing those risks remains the same as for any workplace hazard.
Safe Work Australia has developed guidance to help employers, workers and other duty holders understand the work health and safety (WHS) implications of introducing or changing AI and digital technologies in the workplace.
AI and digital technologies include a broad range of digital hardware and software used at work. While these technologies can improve productivity and support more effective management of WHS risks, they can also create new hazards or increase existing physical and psychological risks if they are not appropriately designed, implemented and managed.
The guidance, available on our website, outlines the opportunities, risks and WHS considerations associated with AI and digital technologies. It also explains how, in consultation with workers and their representatives, duty holders can apply the WHS risk management process to ensure these technologies are introduced and used safely.
Under the model WHS laws, employers have a duty to manage the risks arising from AI and digital technologies to ensure that workers and others remain healthy and safe at work.
