New attractions boost Collie's status as tourism destination

  • $5.8 million transformation of Lake Kepwari is now complete
  • Campgrounds named after two dedicated Collie community members
  • Milestone in Collie tourism project fulfills 2017 election commitment

A new campground and picnic area has officially opened at Collie's Lake Kepwari, completing a $5.8 million transformation to lure tourists to the South-West town.

The David Ugle Campground consists of 32 campsites at the northern edge of the lake, bringing the total number of campsites at Lake Kepwari to 53.

The campground on the eastern side has been renamed Mick Murray Campground to acknowledge the former Local Member's contribution to the development and his commitment to the Collie community.

A new picnic area has also been unveiled along with improved pathway access, barbeque shelters and toilet facilities. The makeover completes a 2017 McGowan Government election commitment.

The former open cut coal mine site has been transformed into a water-based recreation hub for boating, swimming, water-skiing and camping. Construction first began in December 2019 with the opening of the boat ramp area following a year later.

The new facilities are part of the McGowan Government's $24.5 million infrastructure investment program into parks and forests in the Collie region. This includes a mega mural at Wellington Dam as well as mountain bike, walk and drive trails through the Collie River Valley and Ferguson Valley.

Lake Kepwari recorded more than 51,000 visitors last year, with the new campgrounds opening to the public tomorrow. For more information, visit https://exploreparks.dbca.wa.gov.au/park/lake-kepwari
