The Finocchiaro CLP Government has welcomed the addition of extra bail and arrest courts after the upcoming public holiday weekends, marking another step towards a more efficient justice system.
Attorney-General Marie-Clare Boothby said this proactive measure by the courts would assist with matters that arise during the court's closures over the Easter and Anzac Day long weekends.
"Easter is a fun time for people to spend with their friends and families, but when people break the law, we will hold them accountable and ensure justice is served," said Ms Boothby.
"Those who commit crimes will face the consequences no matter the occasion, because the law is not suspended for the holidays, and neither is our commitment to upholding law and order and protecting the community.
"If you want to enjoy your long weekend, then don't commit a crime, because if you do, you'll be spending it behind bars, for the remainder of the holidays, with a looming court date in your future."
Following the Easter and Anzac Day long weekends, the Darwin Local Court will run the additional bail and arrest courts to deal with an anticipated increase in the number of people in custody on Tuesday 22 April, Wednesday 23 April, Thursday 24 April, Monday 28 April and Wednesday 30 April.
Ms Boothby said courts were busier under the Finocchiaro CLP Government's strong on crime approach.
"Since coming into office, we have locked up more than 600 prisoners - that's 600 less offenders out on our streets committing more crimes and harming victims," said Ms Boothby.
"We promised Territorians a year of action, certainty and security, and people who break the law will face the consequences and we make no apologies for that.
"I will continue working closely with the Attorney-General's Department, courts, corrections, and police to provide the necessary support to manage cases efficiently and ensure justice for victims.
"We will continue taking strong action to protect communities and victims, because keeping Territorians safe is our top priority.
"Thank you to everyone working in the courts, corrections and law enforcement throughout the public holidays, your efforts are recognised and appreciated."
The Darwin Local Court will be closed from Good Friday to Easter Monday - Friday 18 April to Monday 21 April - and on Anzac Day, Friday 25 April.
