Henrik Ibsen is among the Nordic examples who contributed to modernism as a complex international trend, and who continues to have an impact on the genres of the novel, drama and poetry. As discussed by the authors in the new book Nordic and European Modernisms. Foto: Wikimedia Commons.

This book shows the development of Nordic modernism in a European context, and presents different aspects of, and varying perspectives on Nordic and European modernisms.

Jacob Lothe is professor emeritus at the Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages, and editor of the book.

In the book he and his fellow contributors show that the emergence of modernism in the Nordic countries is linked to, and inspired by, the innovative works published in western Europe and the US towards the end of the nineteenth century and in the first decades of the twentieth century. But he also shows that Nordic modernism itself contributed to modernism as a complex international trend.

The book Nordic and European Modernisms is a printed edition of a special issue published in Humanities, can be purchased on MDPI website and is also available digitally through Open Access.
