This book shows the development of Nordic modernism in a European context, and presents different aspects of, and varying perspectives on Nordic and European modernisms.
Jacob Lothe is professor emeritus at the Department of Literature, Area Studies and European Languages, and editor of the book.
In the book he and his fellow contributors show that the emergence of modernism in the Nordic countries is linked to, and inspired by, the innovative works published in western Europe and the US towards the end of the nineteenth century and in the first decades of the twentieth century. But he also shows that Nordic modernism itself contributed to modernism as a complex international trend.
