The Argentine Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein welcomed His Majesty Ambassador David Cairns on Monday 15 September 2025.
The new British Ambassador to Argentina, David Cairns , presented his credentials to Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein during a meeting they held today at Palacio San Martin.
During the meeting, they reviewed the current state of bilateral relations and discussed opportunities for bilateral cooperation in different areas. They both underlined the importance of the bilateral relationship, which this year reached its 200th anniversary, having been formalised by signing of the Treaty of Amity, Commerce and Navigation in 1825.
Ambassador Cairns expressed his gratitude for the recent visit to London and Cambridge by Justice Minister Mariano Cúneo Libarona to take part in a symposium on economic crime, and also highlighted the upcoming visit to Argentina by the UK Minister of State in the Department of Business and Trade as a sign of the UK Government's commitment to the bilateral relationship.
Ambassador Cairns said:
I am deeply honoured to represent my country in Argentina, especially in the year we celebrate the Bicentennial of our diplomatic relations. Over these 200 years, we have built cooperation across diverse areas such as trade, politics, science, and culture -ties that have become part of our shared identities as Britons and Argentines. I look forward to deepening those bonds and to supporting the clear priority of our Prime Minister and your President: growth and prosperity.
Ambassador Cairns arrived in Argentina on 13 September together with his wife Sharon. He joined the Foreign Office in 1993 and held various positions in London, Geneva and Tokyo before being appointed British Ambassador to Sweden. After a spell in the private sector, he returned this year to the British diplomatic service to succeed Kirsty Hayes as the UK's diplomatic representative in Argentina.
