New Chapter For South Hurstville Library

Georges River Council

South Hurstville Library will receive upgrades between March and June this year. These changes will improve visibility, accessibility, and comfort for the local community.

The improvements include:

  • The installation of a 24/7 book locker, providing greater access to busy families and library lovers.

  • New outdoor lighting and CCTV to enhance safety around the building.

  • New furniture and shelves to enhance flexible programming spaces, study areas and comfortable lounging.

  • New signage and playful artwork, including wayfinding.

The project is part of Council's Action Plan for Library Spaces and is funded through Council's budget for library renewal. The project was developed in response to community feedback, accessibility and best practice.

South Hurstville is a recognised family hub. Couples with children represent 37.7% of households. This is higher than the average for Georges River (36.2%) and Greater Sydney (34.4%), according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The library is an important local resource. The Libraries 2030 Community Check-In Survey showed that 94% of people who use South Hurstville Library choose it because it is close to their home or work.

Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, "By improving visibility, accessibility and flexibility, we're responding directly to community feedback. This ensures South Hurstville Library continues to meet the needs of our growing and diverse neighbourhood."

The refreshed space will be ready in June. It will be launched with a community event featuring demonstrations of the new 24/7 book locker and activities for all ages.

The library will remain open and continue to offer full services throughout the upgrade period.
