New Direct International Flights Reach Western Australia

  • Two new non-stop services to bring visitors from Auckland and Johannesburg to Perth
  • Flights will provide an extra 80,000 inbound seats into WA every year
  • Part of the Cook Government's economic diversification strategy to generate valuable tourism dollars for local business and support local jobs

Western Australia has marked a major step forward in its tourism goals, with new non-stop services from Auckland and Johannesburg to bring more visitors to Perth.

Launching from today, both routes will be operated by Qantas and will run three times per week using an Airbus A330, offering greater connectivity and convenience for visitors from New Zealand and South Africa.

This additional capacity will supplement the existing Air New Zealand and South African Airways services into Perth from Auckland and Johannesburg.

The Auckland route is estimated to deliver nearly 40,000 extra inbound seats to WA each year, and New Zealand is WA's third-largest international market, with 79,000 visitors contributing $181 million to the State's economy in the year ending June 2025.

This route also opens a new connection to Perth from the United States via New York City, with the US also one of WA's priority global visitor markets.

The Johannesburg service is also expected to bring an additional 40,000 inbound seats to WA each year, making it easier for visitors from this emerging visitor market to travel to Perth.

With strong South African and New Zealand communities in WA, the flights are anticipated to support family reunions, tourism, and business travel, giving tens of thousands of travellers the opportunity to experience Perth, and the State's beautiful coastline and regions.

The new services also strengthen Perth's reputation as Australia's Western Gateway, with 23 international airlines servicing the State's 20 non-stop routes from international destinations.

These non-stop flights support the Cook Government's economic diversification strategy, boosting tourism, trade and investment opportunities for local businesses and local jobs.

As stated by Tourism Minister Reece Whitby:

"Western Australia welcomes visitors from Auckland and Johannesburg with open arms with these new non-stop services taking flight today.

"These new services from Auckland and Johannesburg are a strong vote of confidence in Perth as Australia's Western Gateway and a world-class visitor destination.

"Expanding WA's non-stop international connections is central to our tourism strategy to make WA more accessible to the world, so that we can attract more visitors and encourage longer stays.

"With these flights bringing an estimated 80,000 additional seats to our State each year, our aviation industry continues to supercharge WA's visitor economy, supporting local jobs and local businesses as part of our government's economic diversification strategy."
