New Frankston Hospital Helipad Ready For Takeoff

VIC Premier

The Allan Labor Government is continuing to make significant progress on the landmark $1.1 billion redevelopment of Frankston Hospital, with the project in its final year of major construction and the new rooftop helipad now complete.

As the redevelopment nears completion, the largest ever health infrastructure project in Melbourne's growing south east is set to transform healthcare for families on the Peninsula, with capacity to treat 35,000 more patients each year once fully operational.

The new helipad will mean that patients with serious injuries or illness can get the care they need, sooner with fast access into the new, 12 story clinical services tower. Importantly, the helipad will also support the quick transfer of critically ill patients to other health services around the state.

The task of constructing the helipad was no mean feat, with construction crews pre-assembling large modules - constructed primarily from high strength aluminium - on the ground, before lifting it into position via tower cranes.

The helipad is equipped with fully integrated lighting and firefighting systems, with testing and commissioning to take place soon.

Once complete, the redeveloped hospital will house a new inpatient services operating theatre suite, new operating theatres, women's and children's services, and cancer services - delivering more patient care while cutting wait times and reducing pressure on other major hospitals.

At the peak of construction, more than 900 construction workers were on site, putting in nearly 2.4 million hours of work to deliver a bigger and better hospital on the Peninsula.

Delivered by the Labor Government and overseen by the Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with Peninsula Health and Exemplar Health consortium, the Frankston Hospital redevelopment will mean better healthcare, closer to home for families in Melbourne's south-east.
