Mildura Rural City Council has officially opened a purpose built animal isolation facility, strengthening the ability to provide high quality care for lost and impounded animals across our municipality.
An isolation facility plays a critical role in protecting animal health. It allows sick or symptomatic animals to be physically separated from the general population, reducing the risk of disease transmission.
Council's Manager Civic Compliance Andrew Millen said the new facility represents a major step forward in animal welfare.
"This isolation facility means sick or vulnerable animals can receive the focused care they need without putting other animals at risk," Mr Millen said. "It gives our team the ability to closely monitor animals in a quieter, low‑stress environment, which is essential for recovery and for preventing the spread of illness."
The opening of the facility comes as Mildura records a seven per cent increase in pet registrations, driven by Council's free first‑year registration program, which will continue this year.
Mr Millen said the rise in registrations shows the program is working exactly as intended.
"Registering your pet is one of the simplest and most important things you can do as an owner," he said. "It helps us reunite lost animals with their families quickly, supports responsible pet ownership, and ensures we can continue investing in facilities like this one."
Mr Millen said the new isolation facility would help Council continue meeting the needs of a growing region.
"Our community expects high standards of animal care, and this facility helps us deliver exactly that," he said. "With more pets being registered and more animals coming through our doors, this investment ensures we can keep them safe, healthy and well‑cared for."
