New Protections For Migratory Seabirds

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

Fifteen migratory seabirds found in Australian waters are now protected under a global treaty. Australia co-sponsored new listings under the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) for:

  • the flesh-footed shearwater
  • 14 gadfly petrel species and subspecies.

Countries adopted the listings at the 15th meeting of the CMS (COP15), which took place in Campo Grande, Brazil from 2329 March 2026.

The listings provide:

  • stricter protections
  • habitat recovery
  • safer migration routes
  • better international cooperation.

These species are important for our biodiversity because they:

  • help enrich Australian soils
  • support healthy vegetation
  • contribute to marine ecosystem health.

CMS is an environmental treaty of the United Nations. It brings together governments and stakeholders to protect migratory species and their habitats. It is legally binding.

We're proud to work with countries around the world to protect the wildlife that connects us.
