Madeleine Ogilvie, Minister for Racing

The Rockliff Liberal Government continues to be a strong supporter of Tasmania's thriving racing industry.

Minister for Racing, Madeleine Ogilvie, said it is great to see the Devonport Racing Club bounce back from the past two Cups which have been impacted by COVID-19 restrictions.

"Major events like today's Devonport Cup are not only important for the Tasmanian economy, but in particular, businesses on the North West Coast who are reaping the rewards of iconic events like the Cup," she said.

"Today's program not only includes the Devonport Cup, but also the inaugural running of the Ladbrokes Carpet Charge.

"It is the richest sprint race on a synthetic surface in Australia conducted over 1009 metre with prizemoney totalling $109,000."

In addition, sporting clubs from the North West Coast were invited to enter a draw to be one of 12 clubs selected to have a horse running in the race for their club.

The clubs are vying for a total prize pool of $25,000, with the winning club receiving $10,000.

"The new race and the support for local sporting clubs is part of Tasracing's commitment to look at new initiatives and ways to attract race goers and generate broader interest in racing amongst the community," Minister Ogilvie said.

"The Tasmanian racing industry is critical for the State, generating close to $185 million in value-added contribution to the Tasmanian economy."
