New ward on way for Royal Darwin Hospital

NT Government

The Territory Labor Government is building a brand new 32 bed multipurpose ward at Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH).

A construction tender has been released today for the design and delivery of the new vital health facility.

This development will increase the number of beds available in the public hospital system, enhancing patient flow and easing pressures on our front line workers.

On a day to day basis, Royal Darwin Hospital's new ward will have the capability to serve bariatric, renal and general patients.

As modular construction methods are being implemented, this will also enable the deployment of additional beds to provide increased health service capacity on short notice.

The $25 million health facility will include:

o negative pressure single bedrooms

o standard bariatric single bedrooms

o general bedrooms

o single bedrooms

o supporting facilities such as offices and team room.

o renal (dialysis) will be able to be incorporated into each of the beds.

The majority of construction will happen off-site helping to improve deployment times and reduce disruption to the public and hospital staff as much as possible.

Construction will begin in early 2024 with the new ward expected to be able to accept patients from early 2025.
