Penn State researchers will keep free open-access publishing options in Wiley journals under a renewed Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) agreement that runs through Dec. 31, 2027. The agreement's new terms are meant to preserve access for researchers while giving universities a more predictable way to manage rising publishing costs.
Under the deal, eligible corresponding authors at Penn State and other BTAA member universities can publish an unlimited number of articles in Wiley's hybrid journals at no cost if the paper is editorially accepted and the author agreement is completed by Dec. 31, 2027.
For articles submitted to Wiley's fully open-access journals, the article must be submitted by Aug. 31, 2026, to be covered under the BTAA agreement. Articles submitted by that deadline will be covered if the corresponding author is affiliated with Penn State or another BTAA institution when the article is later editorially accepted. Authors who submit articles to Wiley's fully open-access journals after Aug. 31 should be prepared to pay an article processing charge.
This agreement gives Penn State researchers and their BTAA colleagues a path to open access publishing with Wiley while helping the University follow strong financial stewardship practices and manage publishing dollars. The agreement also keeps full reading access to Wiley's journal portfolio and perpetual access to subscribed content.
