Northern Territory Police were pleased to see relatively well behaved revellers for New Year's Eve this year.
The severe weather resulted in the cancelation of a number of scheduled events at the Darwin Waterfront and subdued crowds in the entertainment precincts around the CBD.
Traffic members undertook 678 random breath tests across the Darwin region, with 5 low range and 5 medium range drink drivers removed from the roads. Two infringements were issued for failure to wear a seatbelt and 21 for speeding.
At 12:45am, while conducting proactive patrols, police observed a silver Holden HSV driving dangerously on Mitchell Street. Officers apprehended the vehicle and the 18-year-old male driver returned a road side reading of 0.117. A 19-year-old female passenger allegedly exited the vehicle and assaulted one officer. Both were arrested and conveyed to Palmerston Watch house and are expected to appear in court at later dates.
Commander James Joseph Obrien said "We thank the large majority of the Darwin community for doing the right thing, however, it is completely unacceptable to see one of our members assaulted for spending their news years keeping that same community safe. That female will now start 2023 with an assault police charge.
"We are continuing to see a vigorous monsoon flow across the entire Top End with the Bureau of Meteorology issuing another severe weather warning for people in Daly, Tiwi and parts of Arnhem and Gregory districts.
"Northern Territory Emergency Services are urging everyone in the affected areas to stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways and not to drive into floodwaters. Remember; if it's flooded, forget it.
"Let's make sure everyone continues to stay safe as we start the New Year."
Traffic members undertook 56 random breath tests across the Southern Region, with 2 medium range drink drivers, one high range drink driver and one drug driver removed from the roads. Three Infringements were issued for failure to wear a seatbelt and 2 for speeding.
Commander Mathew Hollamby said "Police would like to thank the Alice Springs community for mostly celebrating the New Year's safely and responsibly. It is disappointing that a small cohort of drivers continue to ignore warnings and put lives at risk.
"We would also like to extend out thanks to the emergency services personnel, and other government departments who worked throughout a very wet night across the Territory.
"The Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services wish everyone a safe and happy 2023."
