Next Steps For Council's Purchase Of WCCC

The City of Stonnington is taking further steps to secure the future of the Windsor Community Children's Centre at 131-133 Union Street in Windsor.

The Council has authorised the CEO to enter a contract to purchase the property for $8.4 million, a figure made up of a federal government contribution of $4.3 million, and $4.1 million from Council.

Windsor Community Children's Centre Co-op Ltd (WCCC) has operated a childcare service from the site since 1997, providing education and care for up to 54 children.

Council's purchase of the property from Swinburne University of Technology (SUT) is conditional upon negotiating a lease with WCCC at the site.

Subject to that negotiation process, Council intends to enter a five-year lease with WCCC, commencing 1 January 2027.

To achieve a balance between WCCC's financial position, while providing a return to Council that reflects the costs that Council will incur to update and maintain the building to contemporary standards, Council is proposing a commencing annual rent of up to $70,000 - well below the approximately $134,000 paid by WCCC to SUT in 2026.

"The chance to purchase this unique site on Union St benefits both Council and WCCC," said Mayor Cr Melina Sehr.

"Partnership with the Federal Government has been crucial in helping Council position itself to purchase this asset for the community at a price well below market value.

"The community told us just how much they value WCCC. We listened and acted on their feedback to support the long-standing and beloved community service at the site," said Mayor Sehr.

Council will continue to update the community on the progress of leasing and purchase negotiations.
