NSW Housing Completions Hit Five-Year High

NSW Gov

The Minns Labor Government's planning reforms are helping build momentum in NSW's housing pipeline, with more homes being completed and more construction getting underway.

NSW has recorded the highest number of housing completions since 2020-21 with 49,545 homes completed in the last financial year, a 16 per cent increase on the 2024/25 financial year according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Nationally, completions were up 2.8 per cent over the same period.

The data shows a more than 40 per cent increase in completions for June when compared to the same quarter last year.

Commencements are also increasing reaching 51,807, which is a more than 10 per cent increase on the 2024/25 financial year and the highest in four years.

NSW continues to lead the country with the more homes under construction than any other state or territory.

These results are an encouraging sign that the Minns Labor Government's nation-leading planning reforms are working to get more housing into the pipeline and, importantly, out of the ground. While we are moving in the right direction, there is still much more work to do to deliver the homes NSW needs.

Our reforms and key initiatives include:

  • Landmark reforms to the State's planning legislation
  • The Transport Oriented Development program
  • Low and Mid-rise Housing policy
  • Infill Affordable Housing Scheme
  • The Housing Delivery Authority
  • Pre-sale Finance Guarantee
  • Pattern Book
  • More than 70 state led rezonings

Since the Minns Labor Government took office in April 2023 more than 150, 000 homes have been completed.

The Minns Labor Government is restoring housing choice and diversity and rebalancing housing growth towards existing infrastructure to fill a gap in new housing supply that had been left unaddressed for decades.

The latest ABS results show an encouraging trend but we know there's still more to do as NSW and Australia faces challenging conditions including high interest rates and increasing building material costs.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said:

"This isn't just data, it is new homes for families, key workers and young people, through the completion of almost 50,000 new homes.

"The former Liberal National Government left NSW with a forecast for just 36,000 homes a year.

"The Minns Labor Government has introduced nation leading reforms and initiatives to build consistent momentum across the housing pipeline from approvals to commencements, construction and completions.

"There's more work to be done to address NSW's housing challenges but it's great to see our reforms delivering results for the people of NSW."
