NSW Libraries Unite: Celebrate Community, Learning

NSW Public Libraries Association

Public libraries across New South Wales will throw open their doors on Thursday 30 July 2026 for Open Doors, Open Books, Open Minds, a statewide celebration of libraries during Library and Information Week.

Led by the NSW Public Libraries Association (NSWPLA) in partnership with the State Library of NSW, the initiative will see libraries across metropolitan, regional and rural NSW inviting their communities to experience the many services, programs and opportunities modern public libraries provide. Public Libraries are vital services delivered by local Councils across NSW.

From technology and creativity to local history, literacy, lifelong learning and community connection, public libraries have become vibrant community hubs that support people of all ages and backgrounds.

NSWPLA President, Councillor Romola Hollywood, said the initiative celebrates the important role libraries play in communities across the state.

"Open Doors, Open Books, Open Minds reflects exactly what today's public libraries do. Council-run public libraries are open to everyone in our community. Libraries open doors to opportunity, books to knowledge and minds to new ideas, skills and experiences. This statewide celebration is about showcasing the incredible diversity of our public libraries and highlighting the huge variety of ways local councils invest in libraries for people of all ages in our local communities. We are inviting every member of the community to discover what their local library has to offer."

Libraries across NSW are developing a diverse range of activities to reflect the unique interests and strengths of their communities. Visitors can expect everything from behind-the-scenes tours and local history exhibitions to technology demonstrations, makerspace activities, storytimes, author talks, creative workshops and special displays.

Many libraries will also shine a spotlight on the expertise of their staff through "Meet Your Librarian" campaigns, staff recommendations and behind-the-scenes stories that reveal the work involved in delivering modern library services.

Community members will have opportunities to explore digital studios, 3D printing, virtual reality experiences, digitisation services and local studies collections, while others can enjoy silent book clubs, literary trivia, craft activities, technology help sessions, family programs and interactive displays. Many participating libraries will also use the day to launch or promote membership campaigns, encouraging residents who may not have visited their library recently, or perhaps have never been before—to discover the extensive range of free services available.

"Many people are surprised when they discover everything their local library offers," Cr Hollywood said.

"Libraries today are so much more than places to borrow books. They are welcoming spaces where people learn new skills, access technology, connect with others, explore local history, enjoy cultural experiences and participate in community life. Open Doors, Open Books, Open Minds is an invitation for everyone to come and experience the modern public library."

Each participating library will offer its own unique program of activities, reflecting the needs and interests of its local community.

Residents are encouraged to visit their local library on Thursday 30 July to discover everything their library has to offer and experience first-hand why public libraries remain one of Australia's most valued community services.
