The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) expresses its concerns with regards to recent developments in Honduras affecting the process of national elections. The General Secretariat reiterates the call made by the OAS Electoral Observation Mission in Honduras in its recent statement, that beyond the legitimate debate surrounding specific decisions and procedures of the electoral authorities, it is the responsibility of the State to guarantee the autonomy, continuity, and free exercise of these institutions.
Electoral authorities must be able to carry out their technical work in accordance with the law, free from interference and undue pressure of any political actor. Their independence and stability are essential pillars of democratic governance, particularly in the final weeks leading up to an election. Internal differences within collegiate bodies may reflect democratic pluralism, but they must not result in paralysis, undermine the electoral calendar, or affect public trust in the electoral process.
The General Secretariat calls on all actors to respect the institutional framework and contribute to holding the general elections on the established date and under the best possible circumstances. The OAS remains committed to supporting democracy in Honduras and will continue to accompany the country through its Electoral Observation Mission.
