An off-duty police officer has been charged following an alleged pursuit in the state's south earlier today. evening.
About 10.20am (Friday 26 June 2026), officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command allegedly detected a silver Mercedes wagon traveling at more than the signposted 110km/h limit in the southbound lanes of the Hume Highway at Goulburn.
When the vehicle failed to stop as directed, police initiated a pursuit.
The pursuit continued over approximately 65 kilometres, before tyre deflation devices were successfully deployed near the Federal Highway at Yarra.
A short distance away from the initial tyre deflation deployment, police had set up a second tyre deflation site and were in the process of deploying the spikes when the driver allegedly swerved suddenly from lane 2 towards police located in the breakdown lane, before correcting the vehicle and continuing upon the Federal Highway. This action caused the deploying police to abort the deployment and fear for their safety, effectively preventing a further attempt at apprehension.
A short time later the vehicle became disabled before coming to a stop upon the Federal Highway, Sutton, a short distance south of Sutton Road.
The driver – identified as a 26-year-old male off-duty officer attached to the Southern West Metropolitan Region – was arrested and taken to Queanbeyan Police Station, where he was charged with five offences – police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly, drive recklessly/furiously or speed manner dangerous, exceed speed by more than 45km/h, use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention and possess prescribed restricted substance.
The male was refused bail to appear at Bail Division – Court 3 tomorrow (Saturday 27 June 2026).
The officer's driver's licence was suspended by police.
The officer is currently suspended without pay.
