Officer Bitten, Man Charged At Adelong

A man has been charged after allegedly assaulting police during an arrest in the State's south yesterday.

About 1pm yesterday (Wednesday 21 May 2026), two Toyota SUVs collided on the Sturt Highway, near Lower Tarcutta Road, Tarcutta.

No injuries were reported; however, a short time later a sedan has arrived and taken one of the drivers away from the scene before details were exchanged and police were called.

About 2pm, officers attached to the Riverina Police District were patrolling the Adelong area when they saw the sedan travelling on Tumut Street.

Police signalled to the vehicle to stop on Victoria Hill Road, which the driver complied with.

The driver of the SUV – a 34-year-old man – exited from the back of the sedan and left the area on foot.

Following a short foot pursuit, police will allege the man resisted arrest before biting the wrist of the arresting officer.

Following a subsequent search of his property, police alleged located methylamphetamine, cocaine, and $8550 cash.

The man was arrested and taken to Tumut Police Station before being treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for minor injuries before being arrested and taken to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital for assessment.

He has since been charged with seven offences,

- Supply prohibited drug more than indictable and less than commercial quantity (two counts)

- Possess prohibited drug (two counts)

- Hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty

- Assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, and

- Knowingly deal with proceeds of crime.

The man was refused bail to appear at Bail Division - Court 5 today (Thursday 21 May 2026).
