The most popular Queensland names for 2023 have been revealed, with Oliver and Isla topping the list.

Data from Queensland's Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages has been providing insight into naming trends since records began in 1856.

Isla was the most frequent name for 285 newborn girls in 2023, while Oliver retained first place for names for boys (451) – for the 11th year in a row.

The combination of Oliver and Isla holding the top spots previously occurred in 2021, highlighting the ongoing popularity of both names with parents in the Sunshine State.

Queensland registered 58,959 births in 2023 – the third highest of Australian states and territories, and almost 3800 fewer than the previous year (62,740).

The regions with the highest registered births, identified by postcode, include Toowoomba (1442), followed by Coomera (1290) and Beenleigh (1139).

The annual summary showed there were 6,004 different first names given for boys, and 6,922 for girls across the state.
