October Council Meeting Update

The City of Perth Council considered a range of items at its Tuesday, 27 October meeting, from preparing for the handover of Elizabeth Quay and strengthening tree protection, to progressing the City's strategic priorities. Here's a snapshot of the key items and what they mean for our city.

Preparing for the Elizabeth Quay handover

On 30 June 2027, DevelopmentWA will transfer the care, control and management of Elizabeth Quay (EQ), including Barrack Square, to the City.

Council approved a $1.135 million budget amendment to prepare for the handover, which supports 13 new positions and the equipment and systems needed to manage the precinct.

Strengthening protection for Perth's trees

Two important tree protection policies were endorsed, supporting the City's commitment to a greener, more liveable and climate-resilient Perth.

Trees on private property

Following community consultation, Council approved a new local planning policy that strengthens protection for significant trees on private property in Crawley-Nedlands.

The policy encourages tree retention through better planning and design and recognises the need to balance environmental protection with appropriate development.

All ten submissions received during consultation supported the tree protection measures.

Trees in public spaces

Council also approved updates to the Tree Protection Policy, strengthening how the City protects and manages trees in streets, parks and other public spaces.

Together, the policies aim to better protect Perth's urban forest, preserve neighbourhood character and provide more shade and greenery for our community.

Corporate Business Plan – 94% on track

The first quarterly progress report for the City's Corporate Business Plan (CBP) 2026/27–2029/30 showed strong progress against our strategic priorities.

At the end of September, 94 per cent of initiatives and projects were on track, with four deliverables already achieved.

These included progress on the Perth 2029 heritage program, the Transport Strategy, delivery of the Plateful Perth campaign and the City Living and Adaptive Reuse Action Plan.

The CBP sets out how we'll deliver on the Capital City Plan.
