Open Streets Boosts School Days with Fun and Fitness

Darwin City Council

City of Darwin is encouraging families to swap the car ride for a healthier, more sustainable journey to school through Open Streets. This initiative aims to promote active transport to and from school by providing a fun, safe, and accessible space for students.

Walking, cycling, scooting, or taking the bus are simple ways families can enjoy being active together on the school drop-off. With cooler mornings and sunshine-filled days, it's the perfect time to leave the car at home and get moving.

"Active travel is not only great for your health and wellbeing, but it also helps the environment through cleaner air, safer roads, and more active communities," said City of Darwin CEO Simone Saunders.

"We want to support and encourage Darwin families to live happy, healthy, and active lives."

As part of City of Darwin's Movement Strategy, the Open Streets initiative is focused on delivering education and programming that supports active travel and contributes to the Australian Government's recommendation of at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity for youth aged 5-17 at least three days a week, said Ms Saunders.

On event days at Karama Primary School and Nightcliff Primary School, students can enjoy themed games and receive free giveaways including reflective wristbands and bucket hats. Families can also enjoy free barista coffee and a sausage sizzle.
