Operation Furious Hume Highway Wrap Up

Officers from Traffic and Highway Patrol Command were out in force as part of Operation Furious last week (Tuesday 5 March 2024 and Friday 8 March 2024), as part of a high visibility road safety police operation.

The four-day joint operation was conducted between 12:01am Tuesday (5 March) and 11:59pm Friday (8 March 2024), and saw Traffic & Highway Patrol officers deployed to the 840km stretch of the Hume Highway from Summer Hill in Sydney to Albury on the Victorian border.

Victoria Police continued the operation across the border, as part of Operation Hamilton.

Operation Furious targeted speeding and dangerous driving offences, with mobile and stationary speed enforcement to reduce serious injury and fatal crashes on the Hume Highway

The first deployment, saw more than 140 NSW and Victoria Traffic and Highway patrol operatives deployed over four days, with more deployments planned throughout the year.

During the course of the operation, police issued 498 traffic infringement notices total, which included 334 infringements for speeding offences.

Of note, 12 drivers were detected travelling more than 45km/h over the speed limit, including four provisional licence holders.

THWP South-West Acting Commander Josh Dixon said while the operation was a success, it was disappointing that some drivers are still doing the wrong thing.

"While the majority of drivers are doing the right thing, it's disappointing that some are still choosing to risk not only their lives, but the lives of others, by being reckless on our roads and speeding or driving under the influence," Acting Commander Dixon said.

"This operation is proof police in NSW and Victoria won't tolerate that behaviour, and if you chose to do the wrong thing, you will be caught".
