On 6 May 2026, the OSCE Programme Office in Astana, together with the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Republic of Austria, held a ceremonial handover of Doculus Lumus document examination equipment at Astana International Airport, aimed at further strengthening border security and enhancing the efficiency of border control procedures.
At the ceremony, 25 Doculus Lumus devices were handed over, with the overall number of devices provided to the Border Service of the Committee for National Security of the Republic of Kazakhstan amounting to 250 units, thereby further strengthening the efficiency of document verification capacities at border crossing points.
The event was attended by Colonel Gani Agadilov, Deputy Director of the Border Service of the Committee for National Security of the Republic of Kazakhstan; His Excellency Gerhard Karner, Federal Minister of the Interior of Austria; Her Excellency Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Federal Minister for European and International Affairs of Austria; and Ambassador Alexey Rogov, Head of the OSCE Programme Office in Astana.
The Austrian-developed Doculus Lumus document examination devices, with high-quality 15x/22x magnification and colour-accurate, distortion-free optics, and integrated UV and LED lighting for advanced inspection of security features, will support Kazakhstan's border authorities in detecting forged travel documents, improving operational efficiency, and facilitating legitimate cross-border movement.
The programme also featured live demonstrations of passport control procedures using the new equipment, as well as operational showcases of detection dog units (K9) trained with OSCE and Austrian support, including the earlier provision of "Malinois" service dogs to Kazakhstan's Border Service.
The OSCE Programme Office in Astana continues to work with OSCE participating States, national authorities, and international partners to enhance border security, strengthen institutional capacities, and promote effective responses to transnational security challenges such as irregular migration, smuggling of contraband, and illicit drug and weapons trafficking.
