In response to Australia's gas export tax inquiry report, released today, Oxfam Australia Policy and Advocacy Lead, Josie Lee, said:
The inquiry report shows the why Australia urgently needs to properly tax the gas sector, whether or not some politicians want to hear it. Experts without vested interests were clear that the gas sector isn't paying a fair share of tax.
It's disappointing to see the Labor Government defend the big gas' tax record and their profits, when its clear people want change now. Recommending further research and consultation can be used as a delaying tactic - but this issue won't blow over.
New Oxfam research found one in three gas corporations pays no corporate income tax, and those that do pay very little. In 2023–24, the sector paid just 4% tax on $116 billion in income.
At a time when households are struggling with rising costs, gas corporations are set to profit from escalating conflict in the Middle East. Without government action, inequality will deepen and more people will be pushed into hardship.
