Pair arrested after illicit tobacco uncovered

A joint investigation into illicit tobacco has led to the arrest of two men and the seizure of firearms, tobacco and ammunition in Dunnstown, Victoria Police say.

Ballarat Crime Investigation Unit detectives and the Australian Taxation Office, in conjunction with local specialist units, executed a number of search warrants at properties on Ti Tree Road and Navigator-Dunnstown Road on Thursday, 1 March.

The search uncovered 12 acres of tobacco plant crops, which have since been destroyed, 4.2 tonnes of tobacco leaf, three unregistered firearms, ammunition and equipment allegedly used to process tobacco.

A 66-year-old man and 61-year-old man, both from Dunnstown, were arrested at the scene.

They are currently assisting police with their enquiries and no charges have yet been laid.

Police are appealing for any further information regarding the growing of illegal tobacco in the Ballarat area.
