Parliament Backs Builders Not Blockers

VIC Premier

Jess Wilson had a clear choice: back reforms to build more homes or block them. She chose to block them.

Despite Jess Wilson and the Liberals' best attempts, today Parliament passed the biggest planning overhaul in decades - reforms that will deliver more homes for young people near transport, jobs and services.

If Jess Wilson was serious about housing, she would have backed our reforms - just like industry have. Instead, she voted to cut the reforms, cut the homes they'll deliver, and cut millennials out of the market.

Blocking homes is part of the Liberals' DNA - if they win office, they will tear up these reforms and stop thousands of homes from getting built.

Just a few months ago, Jess Wilson's biggest backer, James Newbury, was running up and down Brighton fighting to block new homes and keep millennials out of the housing market.

He even openly declared that the Liberals are planning more NIMBY protests "all over Melbourne" - describing new housing as "hideous" and "trashing the joint."

Last year, the Liberals also tried to cut planning reforms that were already in place - reforms which are making it easier to build townhouses and deliver more homes close to public transport. If they'd succeeded, it would've been the biggest planning rollback in Victoria's history.

While Liberals cut, block and fight among themselves, the Allan Labor Government builds.

We're proud of our reforms which will cut red tape, fast-track good developments, and make the housing system fairer for young Victorians and essential workers who've been locked out of the suburbs they grew up in.

Because for us, the choice is simple. You help young Victorians into the housing market by building more homes - not by blocking them.
