Parliament Preview: Tasmanian Liberal Government getting on with job of delivering 2022-23 State Budget

Nic Street,Leader of the House

With the 2022-23 Budget session resuming in Parliament tomorrow, the Tasmanian Liberal Government continues to get on with the job of delivering on the issues that matter to all Tasmanians.

This week, the Parliament will commence finalising the scrutiny of the Appropriation Bills No 1 and No 2, which is the legislation that delivers the 2022-23 State Budget, strengthening Tasmania's future and delivering for all Tasmanians.

Government Business this week is earmarked to consider the reports of the House's Estimates Committees A and B, with time allowed for each Minister's portfolio.

In addition to the continued scrutiny of the Budget, the Government will introduce important legislation into Parliament this week, delivering on election commitments, including:

  • Our Carers Recognition Bill 2022, which will recognise the over 80,000 Tasmanians who provide support to family members and friends as unpaid and informal carers; and
  • Our Sentencing Amendment (Mandatory Sentencing) Bill 2022, which provides for guaranteed minimum jail sentences for serious sexual offenders.

Our Government has a strong plan and a busy Parliamentary agenda, and we will continue to focus on what matters to Tasmanians: health, education, housing, and building safe, inclusive, thriving communities.

In stark contrast, Labor has once again wasted the Budget session so far and has completely failed to outline an alternative plan, choosing instead to just play politics.

After more than 3,000 days in Opposition, Labor still couldn't produce a costed alternative Budget, with Rebecca White and Shane Broad failing to have the courage of their convictions to break the mould and detail how they would do things differently.

In fact, all we learnt about Labor is that their new Prophet of Doom, leader-in-waiting Mr Winter, is actually the Member for Anti-Everything.

When you've got absolutely no vision and no plan, all you've got left is relentless negativity.

It's only the Tasmanian Liberal Government that has the proven record and experienced team to continue to support Tasmanians, our businesses, and our community, as we strengthen Tasmania's future by delivering our plan through the 2022-23 State Budget.
