Partnership Fund delivers strong growth in international education

The Palaszczuk Government has today launched the next stage of its $6 million fund to partner with international education and training providers who are advancing the state as a world-class study destination. The International Education and Training Partnership Fund offers the region's study clusters, universities, TAFEs, high schools, English language colleges and other providers the opportunity to deliver unique initiatives and experiences for international students.

Ministerial Champion for International Education and Training Kate Jones said the Partnership Fund had boosted Queensland's profile as a world-class destination for students.

"The international education sector is the state's fastest growing export sector," said Ms Jones.

"But, for continued growth, we need to partner with our on-the-ground institutions and providers to give students great experiences.

"Showcasing our skills and resources to the world will attract more students here, bringing with them economic, social and cultural benefits for Queensland."

The Partnership Fund, launched in 2016, has supported 74 projects benefitting more than 42,000 students around the state. As many as 54 projects supported the regional areas with a combined value of $2.5 million.

The Partnership Fund is designed to raise the profile of Queensland's 10 international study destinations from Cairns to Coolangatta, support students who choose to call Queensland home and connect students with industry to help improve graduate outcomes.

The next stage of the Partnership Fund comes as researcher Deloitte Access Economics reported the export value of international education and training eclipsed $5 billion in Queensland last year.

Over 2018, Deloitte Access Economic also found:

  • 9.6 per cent increase in international student enrolments across Queensland
  • One-in-three students studied outside Brisbane
  • $98.8m was generated state-wide through visits by students' friends and relatives
  • Study Queensland, within Trade and Investment Queensland, has encouraged funding applications of between $10,000 to $150,000 from institutions and providers that address:

o Talent and employability (experiential learning programs and industry partnerships)

o International engagement in aligned markets (boosting partnerships, familiarisations and strategic missions)

o Student experience and support services.

The Student Hubs deliver programs and support services that enhance the experiences of overseas students and connect them with the wider community.

Applications will remain open for six weeks for the 2019/20 round of the International Education and Training Partnership Fund, closing December 10.
