Parvovirus Alert at Ballarat Animal Shelter

Statement attributed to City of Ballarat Director Development and Growth, Natalie Robertson

The Ballarat Animal Shelter has had one dog with a confirmed case of parvovirus and two suspected cases. All suspected and confirmed cases are receiving veterinary treatment.

The Animal Shelter has well-established infection control procedures that have been immediately implemented. This involves restricting movement of dogs in and out of the shelter and implementing strict quarantine within the shelter, to reduce the risk of the virus spreading further. Dogs at highest risk are puppies and immuno-comprised and unvaccinated adult dogs.

As a result, the Animal Shelter will not be open for animal adoptions until at least Monday 28 July when the situation will be reassessed. We will keep the community informed of any changes as the week progresses.
