Researchers at Penn State are solving some of the toughest problems facing our nation, like building more resilient infrastructure, protecting our troops with the latest technologies, fighting disease, and giving American farms and industries the tools they need to compete and win.
But that work simply cannot happen without sustained federal investment.
A petition launched by Penn State invites the University community to support continued federal investment in research that plays a vital role in life-changing solutions, powering economic growth across the commonwealth and beyond, and driving transformational discovery. The petition, which has already garnered more than 4,500 signatures, aims to engage University employees, students, alumni and friends to raise awareness of the impact that federally funded research has on the daily lives of all Pennsylvanians.
Sign the petition at psu.edu/supportresearch to voice support for continued federal investment in the work that makes our lives healthier, our nation safer, and our economy stronger.
"The impact of research is all around us. From life-saving medical treatments, the food on our table, and the phone in your pocket, you can't go about your day without encountering something spawned from research," said Andrew Read, senior vice president for research. "As leaders in research, our strength is in our collective voice. By signing and sharing this petition, you're helping Penn State continue its mission to serve students and communities across the commonwealth."
The petition comes amid federal budget and appropriations concerns, which have already led to grant terminations, award slowdowns, and proposed federal agency funding cuts. Additionally, the proposed 15% caps on facilities and administration costs that accompany research grants would result in a $90 million annual loss in research infrastructure support at Penn State.
"For decades, federally funded research projects have made our nation safer, stronger, and more prosperous. Cutting that funding now would put all of this at risk, as well as America's standing as a global leader. Research is not a luxury. It's how America leads. For these reasons and so many more, we urge Congress to support federally funded research," the petition reads.
The petition is part of a broader effort by Penn State to engage stakeholders and educate policymakers about the critical importance of federal research support. All Penn Staters are encouraged to sign and share the petition this week as Congress continues work on appropriations. Penn State will utilize the petition in communication with Pennsylvania's congressional delegation as a clear demonstration of widespread support for the University's research mission and its statewide impact.
