Perth is last stop on Silk Road exhibition's international tour

  • Silk Road Culture Tour exhibition provides opportunity for cultural exchange
  • The Silk Road was an ancient trade route connecting the East and West
  • A new free exhibition at the Perth Concert Hall is providing valuable opportunities for cultural exchange between Western Australian and Chinese artists.

The Silk Road Culture Tour explores Chinese representations of femininity through contemporary and traditional Chinese visual artworks.

A delegation of curators and artists from China - in Perth to install the exhibition - were joined by Western Australian curators and visual arts students earlier today for a meet and greet and walk-through of the exhibition.

Among an itinerary of activities, the delegation visited the Art Gallery of WA to see culturally significant artworks from Kimberley Aboriginal Art Centres at the Desert River Sea exhibition.

The Silk Road Culture Tour has presented in Malta, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Spain. Perth is the last city on the tour, giving WA audiences a final chance to view the free exhibition which will run from tomorrow (March 14) to March 27, 2019.

As noted by Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman:

"The creative industries are an excellent way to build links between people, and to further develop a society that values cultural diversity. I am delighted Western Australians have the chance to witness this spectacular exhibition and participate in this rich cultural exchange."

As noted by Asian Engagement Minister Peter Tinley:

"Presenting this exhibition acknowledges our valued relationship with China, which goes back centuries. International engagement and building important connections with our neighbours is critical to WA's ongoing social, cultural and economic development."
