Central Goldfields Shire residents will soon have the chance to try one of Australia's fastest‑growing social sports, with Pickleball launching in Maryborough next week.

The launch of Pickleball in Maryborough stems from a partnership between the Victorian Government's Healthy Loddon Campaspe program and Council.

Pickleball is a fun, low‑impact paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis.

It is played on a small court with a lightweight paddle and perforated ball, making it accessible, easy to learn and suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Weekly Pickleball sessions will commence on Wednesday 22 April at 4.45pm at the Nolan Street Gym behind the Central Goldfields Shire Council Office and VicRoads.

Sessions will run for one hour each week, led by instructor Brendon Booth, and will continue every Wednesday through to 24 June 2026.

The program is open to people of all ages and abilities, offering a welcoming and informal way for the community to stay active and connected.

Central Goldfields Shire Councillor Liesbeth Long said the introduction of Pickleball is another positive step in expanding inclusive recreation opportunities across the Shire.

"Last year we launched Walking Basketball as part of a similar partnership, and it's been an overwhelming success. It's fantastic to now see Pickleball introduced in Central Goldfields. I have been watching the popularity of Pickleball grow over recent times and have wanted to have a go for ages.

"Pickleball is a great way to stay active, meet new people, try something new and enjoy the many social and health benefits that come from being part of a team.

And what's not to love? Pickleball offers a high-quality, low-impact workout that improves cardiovascular health, balance and agility while being gentle on joints. It boosts mental sharpness, enhances hand-eye coordination and fosters strong social connections, making it ideal for all ages, especially seniors."

"It is a welcoming, inclusive program designed to keep people moving, connected and having fun – no matter their age. I look forward to seeing you on court for a game soon!"
