Pirates Seize Ferry, Raise Funds for Cancer Research

Shitbox Rally

ROCKHAMPTON, QLD TO HOBART, TAS via Bass Strait

That's right, Shitbox Rally the largest community fundraiser in Australia for Cancer Council are taking over the largest ferry in Australia for an overnight voyage across Bass Strait, all dressed as pirates!

It's going to be one heck of an adventure. Shitbox Rally is not a race but a challenge with cars that must be 2WD and worth less than $1,500 - a "Shitbox" hence the name of the rally.

The fundraising goal for Shitbox Rally Summer is set to $2 million with teams already raising over $1.5 million. Overall funds since the rallies began in 2010 reaching a massive $35 million.

Teams of two in 250 cars will leave Rockhampton, QLD on Saturday 18th March 2023 in the morning. Then after 5 days of driving on dusty, mostly unsealed roads, they will then take to the seas on Spirit of Tasmania. And later, cross the finish line in Hobart on Friday 24th March… however, some cars simply won't make it.

James Freeman OAM, who founded Box Rallies (Shitbox Rally and Mystery Box Rally) after losing both of his parents to cancer within 12 months of each other said:

"The terrain couldn't change more than in this rally, with lush green into plenty of red dust of The Outback, pastoral lands, Bass Strait, and some remote Tasmanian tracks. This is the second time in 13 years that we will head back to Tasmania. This rally has so much to offer and will be a great route for all teams that take part.

The rally brings people together from all over the country. Many have been affected by cancer in one way or another, whether it be family, friends, or themselves personally. The rally not only wants to raise awareness and money for Cancer Council but also wants to offer support and a friendly ear to those that have suffered or are suffering."

Thanks to 13 years of Shitbox Rally fundraising, Cancer Council has been able to fund ground-breaking cancer research projects.
