A day in court awaits a man who allegedly used a metal pole to cause significant damage to a Papakura supermarket early this morning.
At around 1.45am, Police received reports of a man allegedly in possession of a large metal pole on Great South Road.
Counties Manukau South Area Prevention Manager, Inspector Matt Hoyes, says the man then used the pole to allegedly smash a supermarket's storefront windows, causing significant damage.
"Thankfully, staff inside the store were able retreat to a safe room and no one was injured."
Police were quickly dispatched to the supermarket, and on arrival identified the offender inside the premises.
As the man exited the store, he ignored instructions to drop the metal pole and fled on foot.
"A short foot pursuit ensued, with staff apprehending the male nearby on Great South Road.
"Fresh information later connected the man to damage allegedly caused to a premises on O'Shannessey Street earlier in the night," Inspector Hoyes says.
A 38-year-old male will appear in Manukau District Court today, charged with two counts of wilful damage, burglary, and resist Police.
