Police bust drone drug traffickers

Two people have been arrested for allegedly using a drone to traffick drugs into a Victorian prison.

Detectives from the North West Metro Regional Crime Squad have been investigating the alleged incident reported to occur at a corrections facility in Truganina in March this year.

It's alleged a milk carton was located in the facility, which contained a quantity of illicit drugs and nicotine patches.

With support provided from Corrections Victoria, police have been working hard to track down those involved, which led to a series of search warrants conducted last week.

The two search warrants were conducted in Mount Waverley and Brunswick West on Thursday 13 July, resulting in the arrest of two people.

During the search warrants, police seized the following items:

• 1 x drone

• 4 grams of methyl amphetamine

• 3.2 grams of heroin

• 11 Buprenorphine strips

• Quantity of prescription medication

• 1 x sword

• Several identification documents in various names

• Several mobile phones

A 39-year-old Mount Waverley man has been charged with trafficking drug of dependence, introducing an item into a prison, possess drugs and prescription medication, handle stolen goods, deal in the proceeds of crime, possess prohibited weapon, fail to answer bail and committing an indictable offence whilst on bail.

He is expected to appear at Ringwood Magistrates' Court today (17 July).

A 31-year-old Brunswick West woman has been charged with trafficking drug of dependence, introducing an item into a prison and possess drugs.

She has been bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 26 October.

Under Section 32 of the Corrections Act 1986 it is an offence to send or attempt to send anything into or out of a prison.

The maximum penalty for this offence is 2 years imprisonment.

Anyone with information about drug trafficking or items sent into Victorian prisons is urged to report the information to Crime Stoppers Victoria. An anonymous report can be made by calling 1800 333 000 or via www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
