Police charge man over armed robbery in Newcastle

A man has been charged following an alleged armed robbery in Newcastle.

About 11am yesterday (Sunday 23 April 2023), police were called to a convenient store on Hunter Street, Newcastle, following reports a man had allegedly threatened a worker with a knife before stealing cash.

Officers attached to Newcastle City Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police were told a man had allegedly attempted to rob another business on Hunter Street but was unsuccessful. The two incidents are believed to be linked.

Following inquiries, about 12.30pm the same day, police arrested a 37-year-old man on Wharf Road, Newcastle.

The man was taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was charged with robbery armed with offensive weapon and attempted robbery with offensive weapon.

He was refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court today (Monday 24 April 2023).
