Police charge man over ongoing sexual abuse of young girl

A man will appear at court today charged over the alleged ongoing sexual abuse of a girl in the state's Riverina region.

Detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad commenced an investigation, following reports an 11-year-old girl had been sexually and indecently assaulted by a man known to her.

Following extensive investigations, detectives arrested a 37-year-old man at Wagga Wagga Police Station yesterday (Tuesday 11 June 2019).

He was charged with seven offences, including:

  • three counts of sexual intercourse with child under age of 10,
  • aggravated indecent assault – victim under the age of 16 years,
  • two counts of aggravated indecency – victim under 16 and under authority of offender, and
  • use child under 14 years to make child abuse material.

Police will allege in court that the man, who was known to the girl, sexually and indecently assaulted her on numerous occasions at a home in the Riverina region between October 2015 and February 2018, when the child was aged between seven and 10.

The man was refused bail to appear at Wagga Wagga Local Court today (Wednesday 12 June 2019).

The Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate matters against children and adults, including sexual assault, serious physical abuse, and extreme cases of neglect.
