Police encourage responsible New Year's Eve celebrations

Tasmania Police are encouraging people to celebrate New Year's Eve responsibly tonight.

"Police urge everyone celebrating New Year's Eve tonight to drink responsibly, look after their mates, and plan a safe way home," said Acting Inspector Ben Duffey

Proactive police patrols in the entertainment areas of Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie are planned to make sure everyone can celebrate New Year's Eve in a safe environment.

"With the risk of anti-social behaviour higher when groups of people consume alcohol together we'll have high-visibility police patrols at entertainment areas and licensed premises to deter alcohol-related offences and violence," said Acting Inspector Duffey.

"We want everyone to have a good time and encourage people not to drink to excess and let their behaviour ruin the night for others.

"Enjoy your celebrations, plan a safe way home, and never drive if you're under the influence."
