Police investigate serious assault at Carey Park

Bunbury Detectives have charged a man in relation to a wounding incident in Carey Park yesterday afternoon, Saturday 22 February 2020.

About 12:45pm a 73-year-old man was leaving a shopping centre on Brittain Road when he was approached by a man armed with a chisel.

It will be alleged the offender struck the victim twice with the chisel, causing a laceration injury to the victim's abdomen. The victim fell to the ground and the offender fled the scene. It will be further alleged there were several members of the public present who feared for their safety.

Security personnel at the shopping centre responded to the incident and followed the offender as he ran across Bussell Highway to a park area. Police attended and arrested a 25-year-old man.

The victim was taken by St John Ambulance to Bunbury Regional Hospital.

The victim and alleged offender are not known to each other.

It will be further alleged the offender had earlier breached a Violence Restraining Order, not linked to this incident.

A 25-year-old man from Usher has been charged with:

- With intent to harm, did an act causing bodily harm

- Being armed in a way that may cause fear

- Breach Violence Restraining Order

He was refused bail and is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court (Northbridge sitting) today, Sunday 23 February 2020.
