Police lay charges after Collingwood unit fire

Yarra Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man following a unit fire in Collingwood last night.

The unit, on Palmer Street, became engulfed in flames about 10.15pm and was extensively damaged before the fire was brought under control.

Detectives believe the occupant of the unit, a 36-year-old woman, was not home at the time of the fire.

A 19-year-old Bayswater North man was overnight charged with criminal damage by fire and conduct endangering person.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court later today.
