Police lay charges - Aggravated assault in Darwin City 14 November

Northern Territory Police have charged a 42-year-old man in relation to an incident that occurred in Darwin City last week.

Shortly before 5:00pm on Friday, a group of adults were seated on the footpath near Raintree Park when the man allegedly assaulted a 61-year-old woman with a blunt weapon, knocking her to the ground. Using the weapon again, he struck a second victim, a 68-year-old man, rendering him unconscious and bleeding extensively from a laceration to his head before continuing to assault the woman.

Nearby witnesses driving past stopped and intervened before calling Police and St John Ambulance.

Paramedics attended and provided first aid before taking both victims to Royal Darwin Hospital, where they received treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

The incident was captured on CCTV and the offender subsequently located nearby and arrested by General Duties.

He has since been charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of recklessly endangering serious harm.

The man was remanded in custody and is expected to appear in the Darwin Local Court today.

Strike Force Lyra are investigating the matter.

Sergeant Caragh Hen said "The usage of CCTV in the area has greatly assisted police to make a quick arrest.

"Police would also like to thank the members of the public who stopped to assist. It would have been very confronting to witness the incident and I commend them for providing help to the victims who were badly injured.
