Police make arrest after pursuit - Werribee

Police have arrested a man following a pursuit in Werribee on Thursday night.

Officers in an unmarked car were patrolling Synnot Street, Werribee about 9pm when they noticed a car being driven erratically.

Members followed the car and observed it drive onto the wrong side of the road and collide with a passing vehicle before continuing on and heading for Derrimut Road.

Once on Derrimut Road the car continued to be driven erratically and was constantly on the wrong side of the road.

Police attempted to intercept the car and a pursuit was initiated for safety reasons.

The car drove into a shopping centre carpark on Derrimut Road and collided with two parked cars before the driver attempted to drive out of the carpark and crashed into a Dog Squad vehicle.

The driver then exited his vehicle and attempted to run off but was apprehended by police.

A 35-year-old Maidstone man has been taken to hospital under police guard while a police dog has been taken to a vet after suffering facial and leg injuries in the collision.

The arrest came as part of Operation Shows, which was established in January 2022 following an increase in motorbike riders and young male drivers driving at dangerously high speeds and attempting to evade police in the local area.

As part of the dedicated operation, uniform police work collaboratively with the Highway Patrol, Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit, Divisional Response Unit.

Victoria Police's Air Wing unit also scour the area to detect any potentially risky drivers, with units on the ground responding. The Dog Squad are also available in the area to search for any offenders who attempt to flee.

Given the heavy police presence, other offenders are also regularly identified and arrested as part of the operation.
