Police Seek Help in Byron Bay Assault Case

Detectives have commenced an investigation after a man was seriously assaulted in the state's north overnight.

About 11.40pm yesterday (Sunday 7 June 2026), a patrolling police car was flagged down by a 28-year-old man along Butler Street, Byron Bay, who reported being assaulted.

Officers rendered first aid to the man – a Canadian National - prior to conveying him to the Byron Bay Hospital.

The man was later transferred to Tweed Valley Hospital in a serious but stable condition with a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain and spinal injuries.

Investigators have been informed that the man was consuming alcohol with about five other males not known to him in a park on Jonson Street a short time earlier when he was assaulted by the group.

Following the assault, the man fled into bushland before gaining the attention of the passing police vehicle.

Two of the males involved in the fight are believed to be aged about 16 or 17.
